Proverbs 4:20 (KJV)
“My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.”
Every day, hundreds of voices compete for our attention.
Phones beep. Videos start automatically. Advertisements tell us what we should buy. Friends tell us what is popular. News and social media tell us what we should worry about. Even our own thoughts can become noisy.
Then Jesus sits down on a mountain and begins to speak.
The question is: Will we hear Him?
Listening in the Bible means more than hearing sounds. It means giving serious attention to what God says.
Proverbs tells us, “Attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.” Then it says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
What we repeatedly listen to eventually influences what we think about, what we value, and how we live.
That does not mean every other voice is bad. We need teachers, parents, friends, pastors, and good advice.
But no human voice should have greater authority than Jesus.
During this year, we will repeatedly ask a simple question: What did Jesus say?
When His words disagree with our preferences, culture, habits, or opinions, the disciple learns to give Jesus the final word.
What voices have the greatest influence on people today? How can we make sure Jesus has the greatest influence on us?
What gets more of my attention each day than God's Word?
Ask God to help your family recognize His voice in Scripture and give Jesus first place in your thinking.
