Living With Jesus

Day 19 · Week 3

Strength in Dependence

Passage: John 15:1–5; 2 Corinthians 12:9–10
Memory Verse: Matthew 5:3

Today's Scripture

John 15:5 (KJV)
“I am the vine, ye are the branches... for without me ye can do nothing.”

The Thought

Dependence can sound like weakness.

We admire people who can handle problems, make decisions, and get things done. Growing children naturally learn to do more for themselves. Those are good things.

But Jesus says that spiritually we never outgrow our need of Him.

He compared Himself to a vine and His followers to branches. A branch may look strong, but separated from the vine it cannot produce fruit. Its life comes from its connection.

Being poor in spirit means understanding that our spiritual strength works the same way.

We need Christ not only when we first become Christians. We need Him when we are tempted, when we are successful, when we are serving others, when we are making ordinary decisions, and when we think we are doing well.

Paul learned that God's strength could be made perfect in weakness. Recognizing our weakness did not make Christ smaller; it made room for His power.

The goal of Christian growth is therefore not independence from Jesus. It is deeper dependence upon Him.

A mature disciple does not eventually say, “I can take it from here.” A mature disciple learns more fully what Jesus meant when He said, “without me ye can do nothing.”

Talk About It

How is depending on Jesus different from refusing to take responsibility for our choices?

Think About It

When things are going well, do I remember that I still need Christ just as much as when things are difficult?

Pray About It

Tell Jesus that you need Him today. Ask Him to live and work through each member of your family.
