Day 22 · Week 4
Passage: Matthew 5:4; Psalm 34:18
Memory Verse: Matthew 5:4
Matthew 5:4 (KJV)
“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”
Jesus' second Beatitude sounds almost like a contradiction. How can people who mourn be blessed?
Jesus is not saying that sadness itself is good. The Bible never asks us to pretend that pain does not hurt. Jesus Himself wept.
But the person who belongs to God's kingdom does not have to hide from sorrow. We can bring it to God.
There are many reasons people mourn. We grieve when someone dies. We hurt when relationships are broken. We are saddened by suffering around us. And when we begin to understand God's goodness, we also grieve over sin—both the damage it causes and the ways we ourselves have sinned.
Jesus promises that mourning is not the end of the story: “they shall be comforted.”
God draws near to broken hearts. He forgives the repentant. He gives hope to those who grieve. And He promises a future in which sorrow and death will finally end.
Christian faith does not mean we never cry. It means we know where to take our tears.
Why do you think Jesus does not tell His followers simply to ignore or hide sadness?
When I am hurting, do I bring that hurt honestly to God?
Ask God to draw near to anyone in your family who is hurting and to teach you to trust His promise of comfort.
