“And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.”
In the story of the good Samaritan, mercy is not merely a feeling.
A wounded man lies beside the road. Several people see him, but only one stops. The Samaritan bandages his wounds, places him on his own animal, takes him to an inn, and pays for his care.
Jesus asks which man was truly a neighbor.
The answer is simple: “He that shewed mercy.”
Mercy moved.
It is possible to feel sorry for someone and still do nothing. Sometimes there truly is nothing practical we can do. But often compassion becomes meaningful when it takes shape in action.
That action may be small: making a phone call, bringing a meal, sitting with someone who is lonely, helping with a task, giving generously, or noticing a person everyone else has passed by.
The Samaritan did not first ask whether the injured man belonged to his group or deserved his help. He saw suffering and responded.
Jesus' mercy works the same way. He did not love us only in words. He came into our world and gave Himself for us.
Kingdom mercy looks for ways to become practical.
Why is practical help often an important part of showing mercy?
Look for one concrete way your family can lighten someone else's burden today or this week.
Ask God to open your eyes to people who need compassion and to give your family willingness to act when you can help.
