“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:”
God's answer to outward religion is not to remove His law. It is to write His law in the heart.
Jeremiah promised a new covenant in which God would put His law within His people. Hebrews repeats that promise and connects it with Christ's ministry for us.
This fits beautifully with what Jesus teaches in the Sermon on the Mount.
Jesus is taking us beneath outward behavior to the thoughts, desires, motives, and loyalties of the heart.
God does not merely want a child who avoids wrongdoing because a parent is watching. He wants that child to grow into a person who loves what is right. He does not merely want adults who behave religiously when others can see. He wants people whose private lives belong to Him too.
That transformation is God's work in us.
We cooperate by listening to His Word, surrendering our choices, confessing sin, and responding to the Holy Spirit. But we never outgrow our dependence upon grace.
The goal is not legalism—trying to earn God's favor through obedience. Nor is it lawlessness—claiming grace while resisting God's will.
The gospel produces something better: forgiven people learning, by God's power, to love His ways from the heart.
What is the difference between obeying only because someone is watching and having God's law written in the heart?

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” — Matthew 5:17
Then let each person name one way God's commandments protect something good.
Thank Jesus for forgiveness and the new covenant. Ask Him to write His law in your hearts so that your family increasingly loves what He loves.
