Living With Jesus

Day 93 · Week 14

Be Angry, and Sin Not

Passage: Ephesians 4:26–27, 31–32; James 1:19–20
Memory Verse: Ephesians 4:26

Today's Scripture

Ephesians 4:26 (KJV)
“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:”

The Thought

The Bible does not pretend that Christians never become angry.

Instead, it tells us what to do with anger.

“Be ye angry, and sin not.”

Anger can alert us that something is wrong. We may be angry because someone was treated unfairly, because trust was broken, or because something precious was harmed.

But even justified anger can become dangerous if we feed it.

We replay the offense. We imagine what we wish we had said. We recruit other people to our side. We begin wanting the offender to suffer. Eventually the original wrong is joined by new sins of our own.

Paul therefore says not to let the sun go down upon our wrath and not to give place to the devil. James tells us to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath.

That does not mean every disagreement must be completely resolved before bedtime. Some problems require time, prayer, counsel, or careful boundaries. But we should not deliberately nurture anger.

We can bring it to God, refuse revenge, seek wisdom, and choose responses consistent with Christ.

Talk About It

What usually makes anger worse instead of helping it settle down?

Live It

When you become angry today, pause before speaking. Pray briefly and ask, “What response would honor Jesus right now?”

Pray About It

Ask God to give your family wisdom with anger—neither pretending wrong does not matter nor allowing anger to control your words and actions.
