“And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,”
Imagine that you could sit on a hillside and listen to Jesus teach.
That is where our year begins.
Matthew tells us that crowds had been following Jesus. They had heard about His miracles. Some had seen Him heal the sick. Others had listened as He preached that the kingdom of heaven was near.
But when Jesus went up the mountain and sat down, His disciples came close to Him. Then He began to teach.
Before we study anything Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, we should notice what the disciples did first: they came to Him.
Family worship is not simply a time to collect Bible facts. It is a time to come near to Jesus and listen.
During this year we will hear Jesus talk about happiness, anger, forgiveness, prayer, money, worry, judging others, loving enemies, and much more. Some of His words will comfort us. Others will challenge us.
But they all come from the same Person—the One who loves us enough to tell us the truth and who gave His life to save us.
The best way to begin is simply to come and listen.
