Matthew 4:24–25 (KJV)
“And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments... and there followed him great multitudes of people...”
Just before the Sermon on the Mount begins, Matthew describes enormous crowds following Jesus.
They did not all come for the same reason.
Some were sick. Some brought family members who needed healing. Some were curious. Some had heard stories about Jesus and wanted to see Him for themselves. Others were already beginning to believe that He might be the promised Messiah.
Then Matthew says, “seeing the multitudes,” Jesus went up into a mountain.
Jesus saw them.
That may seem like a small detail, but it tells us something important about Him. Jesus did not see a faceless crowd. Throughout the Gospels, He notices individuals: a blind man beside the road, a woman who quietly touches His garment, a tax collector in a tree, children that others thought were unimportant.
He sees people.
He sees families too.
He knows the things that make your family happy and the things that are difficult. He knows the worries that children may not say out loud and the burdens parents carry quietly.
When we open the Bible, we are not trying to get the attention of a distant God. We are listening to the One who already sees us.
Why do you think it matters that Jesus notices people individually, even when He is surrounded by a crowd?
Try to notice someone today who might otherwise be overlooked.
Thank Jesus that He sees every member of your family and knows exactly what each person needs.
