“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Thy kingdom come.”
That prayer looks in more than one direction.
We look forward to the day when Jesus will return and the kingdoms of this world will not continue forever. Sin, suffering, injustice, sickness, and death will end. God's people have good reason to long for Christ's coming kingdom.
But notice what Jesus says next: “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
God's kingdom is also something we invite into our lives now.
When we pray “Thy kingdom come,” we are asking God to accomplish His will in us. We are saying, “Lord, rule here—in my thoughts, my words, my decisions, and my relationships.”
That can be a challenging prayer. We naturally want our own way. But Jesus teaches His disciples to desire the Father's will more than their own.
Every home has opportunities for this. When we choose truth instead of hiding a mistake, forgiveness instead of holding a grudge, or kindness instead of returning an insult, we are choosing to live according to our King's will.
What would change in a home if everyone sincerely prayed, “Thy will be done”?
When you face a decision today, pause and ask, “What would God want me to do?”
Pray the words “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done,” and invite God to make that prayer true in your family.
