“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”
The Bible describes more than one kingdom at work in our world.
Paul says God delivers us “from the power of darkness” and brings us “into the kingdom of his dear Son.” Jesus later describes two roads: one broad and one narrow. They lead in different directions.
This reminds us that following Jesus is more than adding religion to the life we already planned to live. Christ calls us out of one way of living and into another.
The kingdom of darkness says, “Put yourself first.” Jesus says, “Love your neighbour.” Pride says, “Make sure everyone notices you.” Jesus teaches us to do good even when only our Father sees. Revenge says, “Get even.” Jesus says, “Love your enemies.”
We cannot change kingdoms by making ourselves good enough. Paul says God delivers us. Salvation begins with what Christ does for us.
But when Jesus rescues us, He also begins teaching us a new way to live.
The Sermon on the Mount is part of that education. Our King is showing rescued people how citizens of His kingdom live.
What are some differences between the way selfishness tells us to live and the way Jesus teaches us to live?
We do not obey Jesus in order to rescue ourselves. We follow Him because He is the One who rescues us.
Thank God for delivering us from darkness through Christ, and ask Him to teach your family His way of living.
