Daniel 2:44 (KJV)
“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.”
This week we have talked about living under the rule of Jesus now. But God's kingdom also points us toward something still to come.
Daniel saw earthly kingdoms rise and fall. None lasted forever. Then God showed him a kingdom that “shall never be destroyed.”
Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Thy kingdom come,” and He promised that He would return. Revelation looks forward to the day when “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ.”
Christians therefore live with hope.
We know what the world is like now. Families experience disappointment, sickness, separation, injustice, temptation, and death. Following Jesus does not mean those realities suddenly disappear.
But they do not have the last word.
Jesus does.
The King who taught on the mountain will come again. Sin will not continue forever. God's kingdom will not be defeated, replaced, or voted out of existence.
That future hope changes how we live today. We can seek God's kingdom first because we know which kingdom lasts.
