Revelation 21:4 (KJV)
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain...”
“They shall be comforted.”
Jesus' promise reaches farther than the comfort God gives us during difficult days. It points toward a day when the causes of sorrow themselves will be gone.
Revelation describes God dwelling with His people. Death is gone. Sorrow is gone. Crying and pain are gone.
Notice who wipes away the tears: God Himself.
The Bible's hope is not that we will become so strong that nothing can hurt us. It is that God will finally remove sin and everything sin has done to His creation.
That hope rests on Jesus. He entered our sorrow, bore our sin at the cross, rose from the dead, and promised to return. Because He lives, death does not get the final word.
Until then, Christians still mourn. We grieve losses. We repent of sin. We hurt with people who suffer. But we do not mourn without hope.
One day the last funeral will have taken place. The last painful goodbye will have been spoken. The last tear will fall.
And God's people will discover the full meaning of Jesus' promise: “they shall be comforted.”
