“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
Meekness is often mistaken for weakness. We may picture a meek person as someone who is timid, powerless, or afraid to speak.
But that is not the picture Scripture gives us.
Jesus was meek, yet He was not weak. He confronted hypocrisy, drove dishonest merchants from the temple, stood calmly before rulers, and willingly faced the cross. His strength was never controlled by pride or selfishness.
Meekness is strength that has been surrendered to God.
A meek person does not need to win every argument, demand recognition, or retaliate whenever someone causes an offense. Because that person's security rests in God, there is freedom to respond with patience and self-control.
Jesus' promise is also surprising: the meek “shall inherit the earth.” The world often teaches that the aggressive, powerful, and self-promoting get ahead. Jesus says God's final kingdom will not belong to those who seize everything they can. It will be inherited by those who trust Him.
Meekness does not mean allowing evil to go unchallenged. It means that even when we must stand firmly for what is right, our hearts remain under the control of Christ.
What is the difference between being meek and simply being afraid to stand up for what is right?
When I feel challenged or disrespected, do I respond from pride or from a heart surrendered to Jesus?
Ask Jesus to give your family His kind of strength—courageous, patient, self-controlled, and surrendered to God.
