Numbers 12:3 (KJV)
“Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.”
Moses led an entire nation. He confronted Pharaoh. He stood before angry crowds. He climbed Mount Sinai and spoke with God. Yet Scripture calls him “very meek.”
That alone should tell us that meekness is not weakness.
Numbers 12 gives us an especially interesting example. Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses and challenged his position. Moses could have defended himself or attacked them in return.
Instead, God defended him.
When Miriam was struck with leprosy, Moses did not celebrate because his critic had been punished. He cried to God, “Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee.”
That is meekness.
Moses did not need to destroy someone who had attacked him. He could leave his reputation in God's hands and even pray for the person who had wronged him.
There were times when Moses failed in this very area, reminding us that even faithful people still need God's grace. But here we see a powerful picture of strength under God's control.
We may not lead a nation, but we face the same choice whenever someone criticizes us: must I immediately defend myself, or can I trust God enough to respond with grace?
What is surprising about Moses praying for Miriam after she had criticized him?
The next time you feel unfairly criticized, pause before responding. Ask God to help you answer without pride or retaliation.
Ask God for the humility to leave your reputation in His hands and the grace to care about people even when they have hurt you.
