Day 38 · Week 6
Passage: John 4:7–15; John 7:37–38
Memory Verse: Matthew 5:6
John 4:14 (KJV)
“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst...”
A woman came to Jacob's well because she needed water. Jesus used her ordinary thirst to speak about a much deeper need.
He offered her “living water.”
Her life had been marked by broken relationships and disappointment. Jesus knew her story completely, yet He did not avoid her. He helped her see that the deepest thirst of her heart could not be satisfied by another relationship, another trip to the well, or another attempt to arrange life on her own terms.
She needed Him.
We can spend much of life trying to satisfy deep needs with things that were never designed to carry that weight. Possessions, entertainment, achievement, approval, relationships, and success can all be gifts in their proper place. None can take God's place.
Jesus later stood in Jerusalem and cried, “If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”
Notice the invitation: come to Me.
Hungering and thirsting after righteousness is ultimately a hunger for God Himself. We do not merely want better behavior. We need the One who can give us a new heart.
What are some good things that can become substitutes for God if we expect them to satisfy our deepest needs?
When I feel empty or dissatisfied, where do I usually turn first?
Tell Jesus that you want Him to satisfy the deepest needs of your heart. Ask Him to help your family seek Him before substitutes.
