Living With Jesus

Day 52 · Week 8

What Fills the Heart?

Passage: Proverbs 4:23; Philippians 4:8
Memory Verse: Matthew 5:8

Today's Scripture

Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

The Thought

Our hearts are influenced by what we repeatedly allow into our minds.

That does not mean one song, one story, or one conversation automatically determines our character. But over time, what we choose to dwell on shapes our thoughts, desires, and reactions.

That is why Proverbs tells us to guard the heart carefully.

Paul gives practical direction in Philippians 4:8. He tells believers to think about things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report.

This is not a command to ignore everything unpleasant in the world. Scripture itself deals honestly with sin, suffering, injustice, and grief. The issue is what we feed and admire.

Do the things we watch and listen to make selfishness seem attractive? Do they make impurity feel normal? Do they keep anger constantly stirred up? Or do they strengthen gratitude, truth, courage, compassion, and faith?

Purity of heart is God's work, but we cooperate with Him by choosing what receives our attention.

The question is not merely, “Is this allowed?” A better question is, “What is this teaching my heart to love?”

Talk About It

How can entertainment, conversations, or social media influence what we begin to think is normal or desirable?

Live It

Choose one thing today that will help fill your mind with what is true, pure, and good.

Pray About It

Ask God for wisdom to guard your family's hearts without fear, and to fill your minds with things that draw you toward Christ.
