Psalm 86:11 (KJV)
“Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.”
Purity of heart includes an undivided loyalty to God.
David prayed, “unite my heart.” He understood how easily the heart can be pulled in different directions.
We may want to follow God and still want the approval of everyone around us. We may want holiness and still cling to a favorite sin. We may say God comes first while quietly arranging life around something else.
James calls this being “double minded.” A divided heart has trouble walking steadily because two loyalties are competing for control.
Jesus will later say, “No man can serve two masters.” The issue is not that Christians never feel conflict. We do. Temptation itself means competing desires are present.
The deeper question is: Who has our allegiance?
A pure heart says, “Lord, I want You to have all of me.”
That prayer can be costly because God may reveal areas we have tried to reserve for ourselves. But an undivided heart is also freeing. We no longer have to maintain two lives—one for God and another for ourselves.
What are some things that can compete with God for first place in a person's heart?
Is there an area where I want God's direction but also want to keep complete control?
Ask God to unite your hearts so your family's deepest loyalty belongs to Him.
