“But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.”
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced a choice that could not be avoided.
Bow to the image or face the furnace.
Their answer is one of Scripture's clearest pictures of faithful courage. They knew God was able to deliver them. But they did not make obedience conditional upon being rescued.
“But if not,” they said, they still would not worship the image.
Most of our choices will not involve a fiery furnace. But the same question appears in smaller ways: Will I follow God only when it is convenient?
Faithfulness may cost popularity, an opportunity, money, comfort, or an easier path. Sometimes doing right means being the only person in the room who will not go along.
The three Hebrews were respectful toward the king, but they were firm. Courage did not require insults or anger. They simply knew whom they worshiped.
That is an important lesson for families. We want children and adults alike to know not only what we believe but why some convictions cannot be traded for acceptance.
God is able to deliver. But even when obedience carries a cost, He is still worthy of our loyalty.
What made the words “but if not” such a strong statement of faith?
Talk as a family about one situation where doing what is right might require courage even if nobody else agrees.
Ask God for convictions rooted deeply enough in His Word that your family will remain faithful even when obedience costs something.
