“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
The Beatitudes have described humility, repentance, meekness, righteousness, mercy, purity, and peacemaking. We might expect everyone to appreciate people who live that way.
Jesus says that will not always happen.
Sometimes following what is right brings opposition.
Notice carefully why these people are persecuted: “for righteousness' sake.” Jesus is not saying every disagreement or consequence makes us persecuted. If we are rude, dishonest, or unnecessarily offensive, opposition may simply be the result of our own behavior.
But there are times when obedience to God costs something. A student may refuse to join something wrong and be mocked. An employee may tell the truth when dishonesty would be easier. A Christian may hold faithfully to Scripture when the surrounding culture does not understand.
Jesus does not promise that faithfulness will always make life easier. He promises something better: the kingdom belongs to those who remain faithful to Him.
The first Beatitude and this one end with the same promise: “theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Our security does not depend upon everyone's approval. It rests in Christ and His kingdom.
What is the difference between suffering because we did something wrong and suffering because we chose to do what is right?
Am I willing to obey Jesus when doing so might make me unpopular?
Ask Jesus to give your family courage to do what is right while remaining humble, kind, and faithful.
