“Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt...”
Salt changes what it touches.
That makes Jesus' picture very practical. A disciple should not pass through life without making any difference at all.
Paul even uses the picture of salt when talking about our words. Our speech should be “with grace, seasoned with salt.”
Words are one of the most common ways we influence people.
We can use words to encourage or discourage, calm or provoke, tell truth or spread rumors, defend someone or embarrass them. The same mouth that sings a hymn can later speak harshly to a family member.
Being salt does not mean saying religious things in every conversation. It means that Christ changes the quality of our conversations.
Grace should be heard in the way we disagree. Honesty should shape what we report. Kindness should affect how we speak about people who are not present.
Sometimes a few gracious words can change the direction of an entire conversation.
Jesus wants His disciples to make a difference, and one of the first places that difference can be heard is in the way we speak.
How can words change the atmosphere in a home, classroom, workplace, or group of friends?
Look for one person today who could use a sincere word of encouragement, and say it.
Ask God to make your family's words truthful, gracious, and helpful so that your speech reflects Jesus.
