“Ye are the salt of the earth...”
After describing the character of His disciples in the Beatitudes, Jesus tells them what that kind of life is meant to do in the world.
“Ye are the salt of the earth.”
Salt was valuable in Jesus' day. It flavored food and, especially before refrigeration, helped preserve it from decay.
Jesus' disciples are meant to have an influence too.
Notice that He does not say, “Someday, if you become important enough, you might become salt.” He speaks to ordinary disciples and says, “Ye are.”
A Christian family's influence often works in ordinary places: at home, at school, at work, in a neighborhood, at church, or in conversations with friends.
Salt usually does its work quietly. A small amount affects what surrounds it.
In the same way, honesty can influence a workplace. Kindness can change the tone of a classroom. A peaceful response can interrupt an argument. Faithfulness can make someone wonder why you live differently.
We do not change the world by trying to make everyone notice us. We begin by belonging to Jesus and allowing His character to shape the places where He has already put us.
