“As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.”
Salt cannot influence food while it remains sealed in a container.
In the same way, Christians cannot be a meaningful influence if we refuse to have anything to do with people who do not already believe as we do.
Jesus gives us the example.
He ate with publicans and sinners. Religious leaders criticized Him for it, but Jesus explained that people who are spiritually sick need a physician.
Jesus did not participate in sin in order to reach sinners. He remained perfectly faithful to His Father. Yet His holiness did not make Him inaccessible.
That balance matters.
Some Christians are tempted to blend in so completely that there is little difference between their lives and the world around them. Others are tempted to withdraw so completely that they have almost no meaningful relationships with people outside the church.
Jesus calls us to something better: faithfulness without isolation.
We can be good neighbors, caring coworkers, trustworthy friends, and helpful members of our communities while remaining committed to Christ.
People should be able to get close enough to us to experience the love and character of Jesus.
How did Jesus spend time with sinners without allowing their sins to shape His own character?
Think of someone outside your usual circle whom your family could encourage, help, invite, or simply get to know better.
Ask Jesus to help your family be genuinely present in people's lives while remaining faithful to Him.
