“But if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?”
Jesus gives a warning along with the picture of salt.
Salt that no longer has its distinctive quality is no longer useful for the purpose it was meant to serve.
The same danger exists for disciples.
If our values, priorities, speech, entertainment, relationships, and choices become indistinguishable from a life without Christ, what influence are we offering?
Paul says, “be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Christian influence depends upon Christian distinctiveness.
But distinctiveness does not mean trying to look unusual simply for the sake of being different. The Beatitudes have already shown us the difference Jesus wants: humility instead of pride, mercy instead of cruelty, purity instead of divided loyalties, peacemaking instead of conflict, and faithfulness even under pressure.
The question is not, “How can I make people notice that I am different?”
The better question is, “Is Jesus actually changing me?”
When Christ shapes our character, the difference becomes real rather than performed.
What is the difference between being different merely to attract attention and being different because Jesus has changed our values?
Is there an area of my life where I am more concerned with fitting in than with following Christ?
Ask Jesus to keep your family's faith genuine and to transform your lives rather than allowing the world around you to determine your values.
