“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
Jesus first called His disciples the salt of the earth. Now He gives them another picture: light.
Light is meant to be seen.
That does not mean Christians should try to attract attention to themselves. Jesus is describing lives that make something else visible—the character and goodness of God.
Think about what light does. It helps people see. It reveals what is there. It makes a path easier to follow. Even a small light becomes noticeable when the surroundings are dark.
Jesus tells ordinary disciples, “Ye are the light of the world.” Their lives matter because they belong to Him.
Yet Jesus Himself said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). We do not produce spiritual light independently. We reflect the One we follow.
When Jesus changes the way we speak, work, forgive, serve, and treat people, others can see something of Him through us.
The question is not whether we are famous or influential by the world's standards. The question is whether the light Christ gives us is visible where He has placed us.
How can Jesus call Himself the Light of the World and also call His followers the light of the world?
Where has God placed me where someone might see Jesus more clearly through the way I live?
Ask Jesus to shine through your family's words, choices, and relationships so that others can see what He is like.
