“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Before we can understand how Christians are light, we need to remember where the light comes from.
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”
John describes Him as the true Light who came into the world. Christ reveals the Father, exposes the darkness of sin, and shows us the way to life.
We are not asked to invent our own light.
The moon is useful at night, but it does not generate its own light. It reflects the light of the sun. In a similar way, the Christian life is brightest when it reflects Jesus rather than drawing attention to itself.
That changes the way we think about witnessing.
We do not have to create an impressive image of Christianity. We need to know Christ, follow Him, and allow His truth and character to shape us.
If we stop looking to Jesus, our witness quickly becomes about ourselves—our goodness, our opinions, our group, or our accomplishments.
But when we stay close to Christ, the light points back to its Source.
What is the difference between trying to make ourselves look good and allowing our lives to point people toward Jesus?
Think of one quality of Jesus you have seen in Scripture—compassion, truthfulness, patience, courage, purity, or another. Look for one opportunity to reflect that quality today.
Ask Jesus to keep your family's attention fixed on Him so that whatever good others see in you points back to Christ.
