“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”
A city built high on a hill is difficult to hide, especially when its lamps are burning after dark.
Jesus uses that picture to remind His disciples that faith is visible.
People notice more than our religious words. They notice how we treat the waiter, how we speak about someone who annoys us, whether we keep our promises, how we react when plans go wrong, and whether our faith changes ordinary life.
That can sound intimidating. None of us lives perfectly.
But Christian witness does not require pretending to be perfect. Sometimes one of the clearest witnesses is a sincere apology when we have done wrong.
Paul told believers to live as God's children and to “shine as lights in the world.” He connected that witness with everyday attitudes, even telling them to do things without murmurings and disputings.
Our faith becomes visible in surprisingly ordinary moments.
We should therefore ask not merely, “What do people hear me say about Christianity?” but, “What does my life suggest Christianity is like?”
What ordinary actions make someone's faith visible without that person saying anything?
If someone formed an opinion about Jesus only from watching my behavior today, what might they conclude?
Ask God to make your family's everyday life an honest and gracious witness to Christ.
