“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”
Jesus' teaching about adultery and lust makes the most sense when we remember that biblical purity is not based on the idea that marriage or sexuality is bad.
They are God's gifts.
In Genesis, before sin entered the world, God created marriage. A man and woman were joined together in a covenant relationship described as becoming “one flesh.”
Scripture therefore treats marital faithfulness as something precious worth protecting.
God's boundaries for sexuality are not designed to spoil something good. They protect its proper place: the covenant of marriage.
That matters for everyone in a family, though in different ways. Married adults are called to faithfulness to their spouses. Those who are unmarried are called to purity and self-control. Children can begin learning that their bodies and the bodies of others deserve respect and that God's design is good.
Our culture sometimes presents sexual desire as an appetite that must be followed whenever it appears. Scripture teaches something more hopeful: by God's grace, desires do not have to rule us.
Self-control is not the rejection of God's gifts. It is learning to enjoy His gifts according to His wisdom.
How can God's boundaries help protect good gifts rather than merely restrict us?
Do I see God's design for marriage and purity as something good and worth protecting?
