“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
After a week about purity, it would be easy to finish by simply promising to try harder.
David's prayer points us somewhere better.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God.”
David prayed these words after serious sexual sin. He did not excuse what he had done. He confessed his guilt and appealed to God's mercy.
That means Psalm 51 carries hope for people who have failed.
Purity is not only for people who have never made a mistake. Jesus receives sinners who come to Him in repentance. Scripture promises that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive and cleanse us.
Forgiveness does not erase every earthly consequence. Broken trust may take time to rebuild, and some choices leave lasting wounds. But failure does not place a repentant person beyond the reach of Christ.
God can forgive. God can cleanse. God can create new desires and new patterns.
That is why the Christian pursuit of purity is ultimately hopeful. We are not trying to clean our hearts without help. We bring our hearts to the One who can make them new.
