“For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
Jesus said something that must have surprised His listeners. Their righteousness needed to exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees.
The Pharisees were known for careful religious observance. How could ordinary people possibly do better?
As Jesus continues, His meaning becomes clearer. God's kingdom reaches deeper than outward behavior.
It is possible not to murder someone while allowing hatred to grow inside. It is possible to appear pure while secretly feeding sinful desires. It is possible to do a religious act for the purpose of being admired.
Jesus goes to the heart.
This does not mean outward behavior is unimportant. It means that God wants more than outward compliance while our hearts remain unchanged.
We cannot perform that transformation ourselves. David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” The gospel promises that God does not merely forgive us; He works within us.
The kingdom of heaven is not about looking righteous for other people. It is about allowing our King to change us from the inside out.
Why is doing the right thing sometimes easier than wanting the right thing?
When nobody else can see my thoughts or motives, am I still willing to let Jesus rule there?
Ask God to create clean hearts in your family and to make your inward motives as faithful as your outward actions.
