“Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven...”
Jesus' command to rejoice in persecution can sound strange.
He is not telling us to enjoy pain or pretend that mistreatment does not hurt. Scripture never requires us to call evil good.
The reason for joy is larger than the suffering.
Jesus says, “great is your reward in heaven.” Faithful disciples can look beyond the present moment because this world does not have the final word.
The apostles understood this. After being beaten for preaching Christ, they left rejoicing that they had been counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. Then they continued teaching and preaching Jesus.
Their joy came from knowing whom they belonged to.
Paul describes the same perspective. Present troubles are temporary, while the things God has prepared are eternal. That does not make suffering insignificant. It places suffering inside a larger hope.
Jesus Himself is coming again. His kingdom will triumph. Every wrong will be judged rightly. Everything sacrificed for Christ will be seen in its true value.
So Christians do not need to choose between courage and joy. Even when obedience is costly, hope can remain.
How can someone be genuinely hurt by persecution and still have a deeper reason for joy?
Say this week's memory verse together:
“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:10
Then let each person name one reason the return of Jesus helps us face difficult things with hope.
Thank Jesus that His kingdom is greater than anything we may lose by following Him. Ask Him to give your family faithfulness, courage, love, and enduring hope.
